Pathology is the study and diagnosis of disease through examination of organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and whole bodies (autopsies). Pathology also encompasses the related scientific study of disease processes, called general pathology.

Medical pathology is divided into two main branches, anatomical pathology and clinical pathology.

In clinical psychology or psychiatry, the focus is on mental experience and functioning so the term psychopathology is used. Neurological disorders are studied within neurology, where the term neuropathy is generally reserved for cases of peripheral nerve pathology.

Veterinary pathology is concerned with animal disease, whereas phytopathology is the study of plant diseases.

The word pathology is from Greek ?????, pathos, "feeling, suffering"; and -?????, -logia. Pathologization, to pathologize, refers to the process of defining a condition or behavior as pathological.
